Here’s a roundup of the top adventure destinations around the globe that should be on every thrill-seeker’s bucket list.

1. Queenstown, New Zealand – The Adventure Capital of the World

Queenstown was carved out of the land by glaciers, rivers, and lakes, but it has been shaped by innovative adventurers and pioneers from all over the world who made this place home.

Thanks to generations of daring and determined people, Queenstown is a diverse adventure playground, easily accessed by visitors from around the globe. But it wasn’t always so. Before the ease of travel we now take for granted, getting to Queenstown was an adventure – often an incredibly difficult one.    For centuries, Maori had forged trails through the region for seasonal hunting prospects and prized pounamu (greenstone). However, early attempts by European adventurers to reach Lake Whakatipu failed miserably until Maori chief Reko guided the first party to the shores of Lake Whakatipu in 1856.    Once an access way was established, the first pioneers of the district quickly followed, looking for fertile pastureland and soil for farming. Queenstown delivered, but at a price. Lake Whakatipu and the wide, rapid rivers it is linked with claimed the lives of many who tried to cross. Back on land, steep mountains, flash floods, and heavy snow were just a few of the hardships these sturdy settlers had to overcome.

Why Go: Queenstown is the birthplace of commercial bungee jumping and is a haven for adventure sports. Nestled by Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Southern Alps, the landscapes here are just as exhilarating as the activities.

🧗 5. Chamonix, France – Europe's Alpine Playground

Located in the heart of the French Alps, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, commonly known as Chamonix, is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies alike. Its spectacular geography, characterised by towering peaks, rugged terrain, and pristine natural beauty, provides the perfect backdrop for a wide range of sporting activities. In this blog, we'll explore how the unique geography of Chamonix lends itself to a diverse array of sports and adventures, but first, let's go on a journey through geological time.

The final stage of the Cosmiques Arête proves icy and requires care with route finding, but having traversed it previously, I fancy I know the way. With brash optimism, I lead my companions through the floaty surrealism of an alpine mist and then upwards into a vertiginous gully. An ignominious retreat is required, but the others accept this with wry humour. Mistake corrected, we scramble to the final highpoint. A rickety ladder then leads upwards to the Aiguille du Midi cable car station and a grand entrance that could be out of the Cannes Film Festival.

Why Go: Home to Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a magnet for extreme sports lovers.

Top Adventures:

  • Skiing and snowboarding on some of Europe's toughest slopes

  • Mountaineering the Mont Blanc massif

  • Trail running and alpine hiking in summer
